"Tee it Forward" and enjoy the game more

Under the rules of the World Handicap System (WHS) that have now been embraced by all the governing bodies, each set of tees on a golf course are now rated for both men and women for handicap purposes. There is no longer a requirement to play off a specific set of tees. All can choose the tee that will best suit their game. This will make the game more enjoyable for new golfers and for those golfers who may find their skills waning a bit. It will take some getting used to, but this change is for the better. We have three sets of tees at Roanoke and all are rated. As an example, someone with a Handicap index of 19.2 will have a 16 handicap off the Whites (6000 yds), a 14 handicap off the Blacks (5620 yds) and an 11 handicap off the Reds (5249 yds). On any handicapped event you can play from the tee that suits you best and you will use the corresponding handicap. You must play the same tees for the complete round. Be advised that there will be events with designated tees for golfers - the Club Championship would be a good example.

The chart below is our recommendation for which tees to use based on accepted practice. These are only recommendations and the player may play any tees they wish as long as they are the same for the complete round.
